Anne Rice chronicles the ancient life of vampire scholar Marius across centuries of history.
The novel centers on Marius, a powerful and aristocratic killer who originated in ancient Rome. His story covers major historical shifts, including the Visigoth sack and the revival of Roman power. A key element is his enduring quest to find Pandora. The plot also highlights his influence on other vampires, specifically how he gives the dark gift to Armand. Rice uses her background in gothic tradition to frame these events as part of a larger Pantheon of the undead. The narrative does not rush through time but lingers on Marius’s perspective as a witness to centuries of change.
This work is the eighth novel in Anne Rice's internationally bestselling Vampire Chronicles series. It is published by Arrow Books and falls within the gothic fiction tradition, drawing on historical periods like ancient Rome and the Visigoth era to explore the lives of immortal beings.

Needed a good scare and got one. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. Would buy from this store again.
Not my usual subgenre but wanted to branch out. Print is comfortable for late-night reading.
Took a chance on it after reading the description here. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. Happy enough with the purchase.
Finished it over a stormy weekend, which helped. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it.
This has been on my wishlist for months. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. Already eyeing my next order.
