This curated anthology effectively captures the essence of the premiere issue, highlighting the visual aspects of the genre through a blend of narrative and illustration. It stands as a significant bridge between historical magazine formats and modern collecting preferences, offering valuable insight into how horror was presented to audiences in that era. However, it may not satisfy readers seeking modern psychological horror or non-fiction analysis, as it focuses strictly on the classic period of weird fiction. The volume is best suited for those who appreciate the gothic tradition and the specific stylistic lineage of Lovecraftian tales. It serves primarily as a historical artifact rather than a deep analytical study, making it less suitable for readers looking for contemporary interpretations or extensive critical discourse on the subject matter.

A modern classic

Needed a good scare and got one. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. Glad I finally picked this up.
