Bought this for my brother and ended up reading it first. It is the kind of horror that rewards reading with the lights on. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. The cover feels thinner than expected. Good, with the caveats above.
Not my usual subgenre but wanted to branch out. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. My only quibble is that the middle third sags a little. Happy enough with the purchase.
Finished it over a stormy weekend, which helped. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly.
Grabbed it for a long flight. Print is comfortable for late-night reading. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.
A friend from my book club recommended it. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. Already eyeing my next order.
Took a chance on it after reading the description here. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. Well worth it.
Was skeptical at first. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. Five stars from me.
