✍️ Dean KoontzA father and daughter use a mysterious device to traverse parallel realities after a warning is ignored.
The plot centers on Jeffy Coltrane, who has spent seven years maintaining a normal life for himself and his daughter Amity in Suavidad Beach following Michelle’s departure. The arrival of Spooky Ed introduces a dangerous object known as the key to everything. Ed instructs Jeffy to hide it and never use it. This advice is ignored when ominous men appear at their doorstep. The accidental activation of the device allows Jeffy and Amity to jump between parallel planes. These worlds are described as both familiar and bizarre, wondrous and terrifying. The narrative explores whether Michelle can be found in one of these alternate dimensions. The story highlights the conflict between the desire for closure and the risks of tampering with unknown forces. It is a tale of parental love clashing with supernatural danger.
The book sits within the tradition of American speculative fiction, specifically blending suburban gothic elements with science fiction concepts. Published in 2021 by Thomas & Mercer, it reflects contemporary interests in multiverse theory and domestic suspense. The setting of Suavidad Beach grounds the supernatural events in a recognizable, everyday American locale.

Was skeptical at first. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. The cover feels thinner than expected. Still worth having on the shelf.
Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn. Solid, if not essential.
Got it as a gift for a friend who loves the genre. The audiobook crowd will want the paper copy for the margins. One of my better finds this year.
Was skeptical at first. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. Highly recommend.
Been meaning to get this one for a while. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid. Happy enough with the purchase.
