📖 Why choose it
Why this book is worth reading
Readers who appreciate gothic fiction rooted in historical European courts will find this novel deeply engaging. It appeals specifically to those interested in tragic romance and supernatural horror, offering a focused exploration of vengeance and desire within a specific historical framework. The narrative contrasts sacred beauty with profane ferocity, constructing a legend centered on doomed young love and lost innocence. Those who enjoy complex political maneuvering intertwined with demonic conflict will find the setting of the Court of the Ruby Grail compelling. However, readers seeking lighthearted adventure or modern urban fantasy may find the tone too heavy for their tastes. This book suits an audience looking for a dense, atmospheric examination of passion and retribution rather than quick entertainment.

A friend from my book club recommended it. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly.
Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. The cover feels thinner than expected. Solid, if not essential.
Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Highly recommend.
Grabbed it for a long flight. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. It is the kind of horror that rewards reading with the lights on. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you. Good, with the caveats above.
A friend from my book club recommended it. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. It is the kind of horror that rewards reading with the lights on. My only quibble is that the middle third sags a little. Recommended with reservations.
I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. Belongs in any working kitchen.
Not my usual subgenre but wanted to branch out. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn. Happy enough with the purchase.
