Pandora: New Tales of the Vampires
✍️ Anne RiceAnne Rice's collection follows a Roman-born vampire recounting her history in Paris.
The narrative unfolds through Pandora’s own words as she fills a notebook in a Paris cafe. This framing device connects her origins in Augustan Rome with her current existence. The story relies on her perspective to bridge the gap between ancient times and the modern day. Rice uses this structure to examine how a vampire remembers her past. The collection emphasizes the personal cost of immortality rather than external battles. Readers encounter a character who actively shapes her own legend through writing.
Published by Ballantine Books in 1998, this work sits within the tradition of supernatural fiction. It references the mythology of Pandora and the historical period of Augustan Rome. The setting shifts to a contemporary Paris cafe, linking classical history with modern gothic storytelling.

Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. Print is comfortable for late-night reading. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid.
First order from this shop. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. The audiobook crowd will want the paper copy for the margins. A keeper.
Finished it over a stormy weekend, which helped. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. Recommended with reservations.
Bought this for my brother and ended up reading it first. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. Great value for what you get.
