The Sun Down Motel
✍️ Simone St. JamesA dual-timeline horror novel about a haunted motel and a missing aunt.
The narrative follows two women connected by blood and a cursed location in upstate New York. Viv Delaney takes a night clerk job in 1982 to fund her escape to the city, only to encounter terrifying forces within the Sun Down Motel. Carly Kirk arrives in 2017 to uncover the truth about her aunt’s vanishing, discovering that the motel’s dark history has not faded with time. The plot unfolds through Carly’s perspective as she navigates the same eerie corridors and unresolved secrets that trapped Viv. The story emphasizes the persistence of trauma and the inability to escape one’s past. It does not offer easy answers or safe havens for its characters.
The book is set in Fell, New York, during two distinct periods: 1982 and 2017. It reflects the isolation of upstate regions and the lingering impact of unresolved disappearances on subsequent generations.

Needed a good scare and got one. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you. Recommended with reservations.
A friend from my book club recommended it. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. One of my better finds this year.
Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. Belongs in any working kitchen.
Finally got around to ordering this. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. The font runs small in this edition. Good, with the caveats above.
❓ Frequently asked questions
📖 Who should read this
Seekers of moody, atmospheric mysteries centered on haunted motels and buried family secrets will love this slow-burn dread. However, if you crave high-octane action sequences or neat, unambiguous conclusions, this lingering ambiguity will likely leave you frustrated rather than fulfilled.
