Worth the read

This has been on my wishlist for months. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn. Good, with the caveats above.

Mixed feelings

Got it as a gift for a friend who loves the genre. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. My only quibble is that the middle third sags a little. Solid, if not essential.
