A man driven by strange magnetism flees government agents with two unlikely companions.
The plot centers on Quinn Quicksilver, an individual whose life changes when he feels a compelling pull toward the middle of nowhere. This sensation saves him from government pursuers and sets him on a collision course with Bridget Rainking and Sparky. Sparky’s background as a romance novelist adds a layer of unexpected depth to their group dynamic. The story unfolds in the Sonoran Desert, where the trio must outrun a dangerous adversary. Koontz uses this setting to heighten the sense of isolation and urgency. The narrative does not explain the source of the magnetism, leaving it as a central mystery for the characters to confront.
Published by Large Print Press in October 2022, this thriller fits within the contemporary American suspense genre. It draws on Koontz’s established tradition of blending supernatural phenomena with grounded character studies. The setting in the Sonoran Desert reflects common tropes in modern chase narratives.

Been meaning to get this one for a while. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid. My only quibble is that the middle third sags a little. Solid, if not essential.
Got it as a gift for a friend who loves the genre. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. Shipping was quick too.
First order from this shop. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.
I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. The audiobook crowd will want the paper copy for the margins. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. Great value for what you get.
❓ Frequently asked questions
📖 Who should read this
If you crave adrenaline-fueled chases through desolate landscapes with a touch of the uncanny, Quinn’s flight will captivate you. However, if you prefer deliberate, character-driven literary fiction or nuanced political dramas, this relentless, plot-heavy suspense thriller may feel exhausting and one-dimensional to your taste.
