Horror desk

Koontz delivers a poignant study of urban existence where the city itself becomes a character full of hidden terrors. The narrative focuses heavily on Jonah Kirk’s development, influenced by his mother’s singing and grandfather’s piano playing. While the blend of magical wonders and tragic events creates an atmospheric tone, this is not a fast-paced thriller. It may disappoint readers looking for immediate action or straightforward plots without emotional depth. The story relies on its complex family dynamics and the fabric of city characters to drive engagement. Those preferring traditional jump scares might find the pacing deliberate, but fans of gothic atmosphere and psychological nuance will likely appreciate the careful construction of Jonah’s world.
