📝 Description: The Call of Cthulhu and Other Stories

H. P. Lovecraft was born in Providence, Rhode Island, during the late nineteenth century into a wealthy family. He remained largely unknown while alive, with his work appearing almost exclusively in pulp magazines of that era. A scholarly revival in the 1970s brought full appreciation for his contributions to science fiction, fantasy, and horror. His writing centers on cosmicism, a philosophy suggesting humans are insignificant within the vast cosmos. This collection features the seminal short story "The Call of Cthulhu," which established the fictional mythology named after its central creature. The volume includes this title alongside seventeen other stories, offering a representative look at his speculative fiction. Readers interested in the origins of cosmic horror will find cause for celebration here. Those seeking traditional gothic tales without existential dread may find the content less appealing. The book is published by Digireads.com and carries ISBN 9781420982817. It presents Lovecraft’s unique perspective on humanity's place in the universe through a curated selection of his most influential works. The inclusion of "The Call of Cthulhu" provides direct access to the source material that defined a genre.

This Digireads.com edition gathers Lovecraft’s most influential works, anchoring the collection with 'The Call of Cthulhu' alongside seventeen additional stories. While it serves as a crucial primary source for understanding cosmicism, the content may not suit those seeking traditional gothic tales devoid of existential dread. Readers must accept Lovecraft’s challenging prose and indifferent universe philosophy. It is a necessary study for fans of cosmic horror, though potentially alienating for those preferring conventional narrative structures or lighter thematic elements.

Good addition to the shelf

First order from this shop. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn. Good, with the caveats above.

Exactly as described

This has been on my wishlist for months. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. Glad I finally picked this up.

📜 Historical context

Born into privilege in late-nineteenth-century Providence, Lovecraft languished in obscurity during his lifetime, publishing only in obscure pulp magazines. A critical renaissance in the 1970s finally unlocked his genius, revealing him as a master of cosmicism—the chilling philosophy that humanity is insignificant against vast, uncaring universes. This collection serves as a vital bridge to that era, preserving the raw origins of modern speculative horror and establishing the mythos that continues to influence genre writers today.
