Dean Koontz's memoir about his golden retriever Trixie
This nonfiction work diverges from Koontz’s typical genre to focus on his relationship with a dog named Trixie. The author shares memories of their time together, highlighting the mischief and adventure they experienced. He discusses the emotional weight of her passing and the lessons learned during their life together. The book serves as a record of grief and joy for pet owners. It does not offer advice on animal training but instead provides a personal narrative of loss. Readers who enjoy fictional horror may prefer his other works. This title is best for those who appreciate personal essays about companionship and the specific pain of losing a beloved animal.
Published in 2009 by HarperCollins, this book marks Dean Koontz’s entry into nonfiction. It contrasts with his usual horror fiction by focusing on a real-life pet. The work reflects the universal experience of losing an animal companion, offering a specific account from a well-known American author rather than a general cultural study.

Reader rating
Was skeptical at first. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. Happy enough with the purchase.
Not my usual subgenre but wanted to branch out. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you. Recommended with reservations.
A friend from my book club recommended it. It is the kind of horror that rewards reading with the lights on. Will be gifting a copy to a friend.
I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Would buy from this store again.
Finally got around to ordering this. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. The font runs small in this edition. Still worth having on the shelf.
This has been on my wishlist for months. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. Still worth having on the shelf.
