Not my usual subgenre but wanted to branch out. The audiobook crowd will want the paper copy for the margins. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. Recommended with reservations.
Needed a good scare and got one. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn. Good, with the caveats above.
This has been on my wishlist for months. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. My only quibble is that the middle third sags a little. Solid, if not essential.
Needed a good scare and got one. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. Belongs in any working kitchen.
Bought this for my brother and ended up reading it first. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it.
A friend from my book club recommended it. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. A keeper.
Been meaning to get this one for a while. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it. If you like this kind of cooking, don't hesitate.
