However, enthusiasts of gothic fiction and historical horror will appreciate its atmospheric investigation and eerie tone. The story relies on character interactions and local gossip, reflecting late Victorian social dynamics rather than sophisticated mystery mechanics. It is a niche item best suited for Stoker completists or those studying the evolution of supernatural tales. Those expecting Dracula-level intensity may be disappointed, but fans of slow-burn gothic mysteries will find it a charming, if dated, artifact of literary history.

Genuinely scary

I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks.
