📖 Why choose it
Why this book is worth reading
Readers will appreciate this book if they enjoy Stephen King’s signature blend of supernatural fiction and gothic horror set in recognizable American towns. It is particularly rewarding for those interested in narratives about ordinary people confronting extraordinary evils, offering a compelling look at how past burdens shape present actions. The story provides depth through the parallel crises of Gwendy Peterson and Sheriff Norris Ridgewick, linking their fates via a cursed artifact. However, it is not suited for readers seeking fast-paced action without character development, as the narrative relies heavily on tension between Gwendy’s current life and her past burden rather than relentless plot momentum.

I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. It is the kind of horror that rewards reading with the lights on. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. If you like this kind of cooking, don't hesitate.
Needed a good scare and got one. Print is comfortable for late-night reading.
Took a chance on it after reading the description here. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way.
Got it as a gift for a friend who loves the genre. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Already eyeing my next order.
Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted. Good, with the caveats above.
A friend from my book club recommended it. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. One of my better finds this year.
A friend from my book club recommended it. Print is comfortable for late-night reading. Good, with the caveats above.
❓ Frequently asked questions
📖 Who should read this
Fans of Stephen King’s signature blend of small-town dread and supernatural mystery will find this compelling, especially if you enjoy deep character studies within gothic horror settings. However, readers craving non-stop action or superficial protagonists without emotional weight may find the pacing too deliberate and the narrative structure overly contemplative for their tastes.
