A silent boy and his gifted dog face a growing supernatural threat in this suspenseful novel.
The narrative centers on the bond between Woody, a mute child, and Kipp, a perceptive dog. While Megan tries to maintain normalcy, Woody perceives a sinister presence linked to his father's death. Kipp, attuned to this silent communication, becomes an active participant in their survival. The antagonist’s depraved plan unfolds with increasing power, creating a race against time. Koontz utilizes the perspective of the dog to heighten the tension, offering a unique view of the horror. The story does not rely on traditional dialogue but on instinct and observation. This approach suits fans of animal-centric thrillers and gothic horror. It may disappoint readers who prefer fast-paced action or clear verbal explanations of the plot.
Published by Thomas & Mercer in 2020, this work fits within the contemporary horror genre. It draws on gothic traditions of unseen threats and family vulnerability. The narrative reflects modern anxieties about hidden dangers and the limits of parental protection in a hostile world.

Took a chance on it after reading the description here. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. Recommended with reservations.
Finished it over a stormy weekend, which helped. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted. Good, with the caveats above.
This has been on my wishlist for months. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. My only quibble is that the middle third sags a little. Good, with the caveats above.
First order from this shop. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. Highly recommend.
Needed a good scare and got one. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. Great value for what you get.
Needed a good scare and got one. Print is comfortable for late-night reading.
Arrived quickly and well packaged. The audiobook crowd will want the paper copy for the margins. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. If you like this kind of cooking, don't hesitate.
