Stephenson delivers an atmospheric entry in his British vampire series, leveraging York’s historic backdrop to create a palpable sense of unease. The narrative succeeds by grounding supernatural horror in the realistic world of emergency medicine, offering a fresh perspective on the genre. While it relies heavily on established tropes of ancient vampires with hidden pasts, the character-driven approach adds necessary emotional weight. It suits readers who prefer slow-burn psychological tension over rapid action. The prose supports the moody tone effectively, though it may feel familiar to seasoned horror enthusiasts. Ultimately, it is a solid addition for those invested in the series' progression.
