📝 Description: The Beetle
The Beetle is a horror novel that was published in 1897 and significantly outsold Dracula, which appeared in the same year. A polymorphous Egyptian creature--the Beetle--seeks revenge on the eminent British politician Paul Lessingham for crimes committed against the disciples of an ancient cult. Although it is less well-known than Dracula to modern readers, The Beetle remains a leading example of the Gothic novel. The story is told from the perspectives of four different characters, concluding with the account of the detective Augustus Champnell. The action takes place within a three-day period in an undisclosed year in the 1800s.

The Beetle delivers a compelling Gothic experience through its innovative multi-perspective narrative, culminating in a detective's account that grounds the supernatural terror in procedural logic. It excels in building dread through the threat of a shape-shifting antagonist rooted in ancient cults, offering a fresh alternative to contemporary vampire tales. The text is best suited for readers who appreciate historical horror contexts and complex plotting over simple jump scares. While it may lack the polished prose of later masters, its historical significance and atmospheric intensity make it a rewarding read for those willing to engage with the foundational texts of the horror genre.
