The Troop
✍️ Nick CutterA scoutmaster leads boys into the Canadian wilderness where a bioengineered nightmare awaits.
Cutter explores the breakdown of order when a troop encounters an intruder in the wild. The story follows Scoutmaster Tim Riggs and his group as they deal with a creature that is shockingly thin and disturbingly pale. This figure carries a bioengineered horror inside him. The narrative does not rely on complex politics or deep character backstories. It focuses entirely on the immediate physical threat. The boys must confront actions that defy normal human behavior. The plot moves quickly as the infection spreads. Cutter uses the camping trip setting to trap his characters. There is no escape from the darkness surrounding them. The tension builds through their inability to understand what they are facing.
The book was published by Gallery Books in 2016. It fits into the modern landscape of American horror fiction. The story utilizes the classic trope of the isolated camping trip. This setting allows for a focused exploration of fear without external intervention.

Bought this for my brother and ended up reading it first. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. Glad I finally picked this up.
Needed a good scare and got one. The audiobook crowd will want the paper copy for the margins. Recommended with reservations.
Finished it over a stormy weekend, which helped. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn. Solid, if not essential.
I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn. Recommended with reservations.
First order from this shop. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Already eyeing my next order.
Wanted something for October and it delivered. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it. Recommended with reservations.
Took a chance on it after reading the description here. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. My only quibble is that the middle third sags a little. Happy enough with the purchase.
