📜 Historical context
Lovecraft penned this piece in 1917, embedding it within his early exploration of inherited guilt and hereditary insanity. It serves as a precursor to his later cosmic horrors by focusing on internal decay rather than external entities. The narrative reflects the period’s fascination with ancestral curses and the fragility of the human mind when confronted with forbidden pasts.
