The Talisman
✍️ Peter StraubA boy walks across America into a parallel medieval world to save his mother.
Jack Sawyer leaves his home in New Hampshire with a singular purpose. He seeks a magical object that can cure his dying mother. The journey takes him westward, crossing into the Territories. This alternate reality mirrors our own but operates on medieval rules. Jack encounters the queen, who is the twinner of his mother. Both women are ill, linking their fates across dimensions. The narrative relies on the contrast between modern America and this archaic parallel land. It examines how ordinary people interact with extraordinary circumstances. The plot moves steadily toward a resolution in both worlds.
This novel sits within the tradition of American gothic and supernatural fiction. It blends the modern road trip genre with medieval fantasy elements. The work reflects a late twentieth-century interest in dual realities and hidden worlds.

Was skeptical at first. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. Would buy from this store again.
Got it as a gift for a friend who loves the genre. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. Belongs in any working kitchen.
A friend from my book club recommended it. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. Belongs in any working kitchen.
First order from this shop. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. Shipping was quick too.
Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. Belongs in any working kitchen.
Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. The cover feels thinner than expected. Still worth having on the shelf.
Got it as a gift for a friend who loves the genre. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. My only quibble is that the middle third sags a little. Good, with the caveats above.

Devotees of epic fantasy quests and dual-world narratives will thrive in this sprawling tale. However, those craving tight, contemporary realism or brief, self-contained stories will likely find the extended magical detours and complex plotting excessively jarring and unwieldy.
