📝 Description: The Shunned House (Fantasy and Horror Classics); With a Dedication by George Henry Weiss

H. P. Lovecraft crafted this early tale in 1924, a period when he was transitioning from scientific interest to focused fiction writing. The narrative centers on a house built upon an ancient error, where a vast and vampiric entity waits for the warm blood of the living. This work stands as one of his well-known early stories, produced during the years following his 1913 entry into the United Amateur Press Association. Lovecraft began writing at a very young age in Rhode Island, eventually becoming one of the most influential horror writers of the twentieth century through later masterpieces like The Call of Cthulhu. This edition is part of a series republishing scarce early books from the 1900s and before. The publisher, Fantasy and Horror Classics, aims to make these increasingly expensive classics available in affordable, high quality modern formats. The volume includes forty-eight pages and features a dedication by George Henry Weiss. It appeals to readers interested in gothic fiction and the supernatural traditions of the early twentieth century. Those seeking fast-paced action or contemporary settings may find this slow-burn atmospheric tale less suitable. The text remains a direct window into Lovecraft's formative years, offering a glimpse into the origins of his unique style before he achieved widespread acclaim.

However, it is not suitable for readers seeking fast-paced action or contemporary settings; its slow-burn atmosphere may feel dated to some. The narrative centers on a house built upon an ancient error and a blood-seeking entity, offering a glimpse into the author's unique style before widespread acclaim. While the forty-eight-page length and dedication add value, the primary appeal lies in its scholarly interest for those studying the development of supernatural traditions rather than casual readers looking for immediate thrills.

Worth every penny

Took a chance on it after reading the description here. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.

Dread done right

Not my usual subgenre but wanted to branch out. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go.

A modern classic

Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. If you like this kind of cooking, don't hesitate.
