📜 Historical context
This collection anchors itself firmly in the golden age of American and French macabre fiction. By pairing Poe’s psychological mastery with Bierce’s cynical nihilism and Gautier’s exoticism, it highlights the era’s shift toward internalized horror. These works established the foundational tropes of supernatural dread that still define the genre today.
