This ability sets him apart from the opportunistic John Partlow and Ginger LaFrance, who thrive on deception. The plot examines how such talents function when surrounded by greed and despair. McCammon builds suspense through the contrast between Curtis’s quiet integrity and the loud exploitation of his contemporaries. The story does not rely on monster attacks but on psychological dread and moral choices. 📝 Description: The Listener

Robert McCammon returns with a novel set in 1934, capturing the despair of the Great Depression through the lives of three distinct characters. The narrative opens by depicting a world where businesses fail and debt overwhelms American cities. In this bleak landscape, John Partlow and Ginger LaFrance operate as unscrupulous figures who exploit the misery for profit. Their actions contrast sharply with those of Curtis Mayhew, a young black man working as a redcap at the Union Railroad Station. Curtis is known for resolving conflicts among his peers, yet he harbors a secret ability to hear thoughts that remain unspoken. The story draws on gothic and supernatural traditions by exploring how hidden talents intersect with moral decay. McCammon, an established author in the horror genre, structures the plot around these converging lives during a period of intense economic hardship. The book suits readers who enjoy character-driven horror set against historical backdrops. It may not appeal to those seeking fast-paced action or pure fantasy elements without emotional weight. The narrative relies on the tension between public reputation and private knowledge. Cemetery Dance Publications released this edition in February 2018. The ISBN for this specific print run is 9781587676130. McCammon uses the setting of the Depression era to ground his supernatural elements in tangible reality. The text does not offer easy answers but presents a grim view of human nature under pressure.

Horror desk
McCamman crafts a suspenseful narrative where psychological dread replaces traditional horror tropes, appealing to fans of moral complexity. However, it may not suit readers seeking fast-paced action or pure fantasy elements without emotional weight. The story’s strength lies in its examination of greed and despair through the lens of telepathy, offering a grounded yet supernatural experience. While the tone is appropriately bleak, capturing the era's hopelessness, those preferring overt scares might find the quiet intensity less engaging. It is a thoughtful entry for enthusiasts of character-driven horror who value atmospheric tension and historical context over conventional thrills.

Worth every penny

Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. A keeper.

Not my usual subgenre but wanted to branch out. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. It assumes some familiarity with the genre's tropes. Happy enough with the purchase.

Kept me up

Been meaning to get this one for a while. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. Glad I finally picked this up.

Bought this for my brother and ended up reading it first. It is the kind of horror that rewards reading with the lights on. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn. Solid, if not essential.

Good addition to the shelf

Grabbed it for a long flight. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted. Good, with the caveats above.

Good addition to the shelf

A friend from my book club recommended it. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted. Happy enough with the purchase.

❓ Frequently asked questions

It is a hybrid that prioritizes supernatural dread. While the Great Depression setting provides rich texture, the core conflict revolves around psychological terror and unspoken thoughts, making it firmly rooted in horror rather than pure historical fiction.
Probably not. The story relies heavily on building tension through character interactions and atmospheric description rather than rapid action. If you need constant adrenaline, this methodical exploration of moral decay might feel too sluggish for your taste.

📖 Who should read this

Readers who crave atmospheric, character-driven horror rooted in historical realism will find much to love here. However, if you prefer fast-paced action sequences or lighthearted fantasy devoid of emotional gravity, this slow-burn tale of moral decay and psychological dread may leave you wanting more excitement.

📜 Historical context

Robert McCammon places his narrative squarely within the grim reality of the 1934 Great Depression, a period defined by economic despair and systemic failure. By weaving gothic tropes into this historical fabric, he explores how supernatural abilities intersect with profound moral decay during times of intense hardship. This work continues the tradition of using horror to examine societal collapse and human nature under pressure, distinguishing itself through its focus on psychological tension rather than mere monster hunting.
