Soul Boy

John Press’s Soul Boy follows twelve-year-old Jake Wheeler through a supernatural narrative rooted in apocalyptic tradition. The story begins with Jake facing personal hardships before encountering three of the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. These figures inform him that he holds the key to saving the world, shifting his reality from mundane struggles to cosmic stakes. He is joined by a group of unlikely companions including ghostly friends, the smartest girl in school, and angry nuns. This ensemble guides Jake on an adventure that fundamentally alters his life path. The text draws heavily on biblical imagery and gothic tropes to construct its plot. Press utilizes the framework of the Horsemen to drive the narrative forward, blending religious symbolism with young adult challenges. The presence of nuns suggests a conflict between faith and the supernatural events unfolding around Jake. The inclusion of ghostly entities adds a layer of spectral horror typical of the genre. Readers interested in stories where ordinary children are thrust into extraordinary, dangerous roles will find this work relevant. Those seeking purely academic theological analysis may find the fictionalized approach less appealing. The book presents a specific vision of destiny and duty through the eyes of a young protagonist.
