📝 Description: Roadwork

Barton Dawes leads a quiet life that fractures when a highway project threatens his laundry plant and home. His refusal to accept this encroachment isolates him from his wife and friends as he battles an indifferent bureaucratic system. Stephen King, known for crafting tales of ordinary people facing extraordinary dread, explores the psychological toll of such resistance. The narrative focuses on Dawes's steadfast determination against progress, highlighting how personal integrity can become a destructive force when pitted against institutional power. This novel appeals to readers who enjoy character-driven horror and social commentary within the supernatural genre. It suits those interested in stories about individual struggle against overwhelming odds. Readers seeking lighthearted escapism or fast-paced action may find its slow-burn tension unsatisfying. The book examines the erosion of community and the cost of standing alone. King uses his signature style to depict a mundane setting turned menacing, focusing on the internal decay of a man driven by spite and principle. The story does not offer easy resolutions but rather a stark look at human stubbornness. The narrative draws on traditions of gothic fiction where environment reflects inner turmoil. It utilizes the period of modern bureaucratic expansion as a source of conflict. The organization follows Dawes's descent, moving from professional threat to personal isolation. This structure allows King to examine the fragility of domestic stability. The book is a study in futility and rage, grounded in the specific reality of losing one's livelihood and shelter.

Stephen King delivers a grim exploration of psychological horror where mundane threats become terrifying through bureaucratic indifference. This narrative appeals strongly to those who enjoy character-driven stories about individuals fighting uncaring systems. However, it does not suit readers seeking lighthearted escapism or fast-paced action, as its slow-burn tension may feel unsatisfying to some. The book offers no easy resolutions, focusing instead on the destructive force of spite and principle. It is a dense examination of isolation and institutional power, best appreciated by those willing to endure a protagonist's steady unraveling rather than expecting traditional horror thrills or heroic triumphs.

Almost perfect

Not my usual subgenre but wanted to branch out. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. My only quibble is that the middle third sags a little. Happy enough with the purchase.

Good addition to the shelf

This has been on my wishlist for months. Print is comfortable for late-night reading. It assumes some familiarity with the genre's tropes. Good, with the caveats above.

First order from this shop. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted. Solid, if not essential.

A friend from my book club recommended it. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted. Recommended with reservations.

Worth every penny

Been meaning to get this one for a while. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one.

Bought this for my brother and ended up reading it first. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. One of my better finds this year.

Solid horror

Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you.

❓ Frequently asked questions

No. The horror here is psychological and slow-burning, focusing on Dawes’s internal decay rather than chase scenes or immediate violence.
Not at all. It presents a stark, unresolved look at human stubbornness, leaving the reader with a sense of lingering dread rather than closure.

📖 Who should read this

📜 Historical context

Stephen King’s novella sits firmly within his tradition of elevating the mundane into the macabre, echoing classic Gothic tales where repressed rage manifests physically. It continues his exploration of small-town America as a pressure cooker for supernatural dread, positioning individual integrity against institutional indifference. This work reinforces his legacy of showing how ordinary settings can curdle into terrifying landscapes when human pride clashes with unyielding systems.
