Holly Gibney investigates a missing person case involving respectable professors hiding dark secrets.
The narrative centers on Holly Gibney, who steps away from her role at Finders Keepers detective agency due to personal grief. Her quiet life is interrupted by Penny Dahl’s plea for help regarding her daughter Bonnie. The plot shifts focus to the Harris couple, who live near the disappearance site. Their seemingly normal academic life masks a depraved reality. Holly’s investigation requires her to confront these intelligent and dangerous opponents directly. The story emphasizes her ethical compass and bravery as she navigates this perilous situation. King uses this setup to showcase Holly’s independence from her previous partners. The tension arises from the contrast between the professors’ public respectability and their private actions.
This work continues the modern American thriller tradition established in King's recent novels. It fits within the contemporary mystery genre, focusing on urban settings and psychological depth rather than historical periods or supernatural folklore.

Bought this for my brother and ended up reading it first. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly.
Been meaning to get this one for a while. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you.
Got it as a gift for a friend who loves the genre. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.
