📝 Description: Police!!!

Police!!! depicts a frantic New York chase that triggers a stream of disparate thoughts on finance, art, and insects. The protagonist runs from law enforcement and excited citizens while his mind generates a rapid stream of disparate thoughts. This mental activity covers financial depression, the status of the President, and the nature of art. It also touches on macro-lepidoptera, metagrammatism, monoliths, manicures, and monsoons. The book captures a specific moment of physical exhilaration driving intellectual chaos. Chambers uses this scenario to explore how the mind works under stress. The text does not offer traditional plot resolution but rather documents the flow of consciousness during flight. Readers interested in psychological fiction or experimental prose will find value here. Those seeking conventional mystery plots may find the content abstract. The work relies on the author's ability to link unrelated concepts through the narrator's panicked state.

Chambers delivers a surreal narrative that prioritizes mental chaos over external events, creating a dense reading experience. While innovative, this approach may alienate readers expecting a traditional mystery or coherent plot. The text relies heavily on the narrator's panicked state to link disparate concepts, which can feel disjointed and frustrating for some. It is best suited for enthusiasts of psychological horror and early modernist prose who appreciate structural experimentation. Those seeking clear narrative arcs or conventional storytelling will likely find this work too abstract and lacking in traditional satisfaction. The focus on cognitive disarray is fascinating but demands patience from the audience.

Exactly as described

Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid. If you like this kind of cooking, don't hesitate.

Almost perfect

Finally got around to ordering this. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted.

Very good

Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. Print is comfortable for late-night reading. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you. Still worth having on the shelf.

Not for the squeamish

This has been on my wishlist for months. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. My only quibble is that the middle third sags a little. Good, with the caveats above.

Not for the squeamish

Finished it over a stormy weekend, which helped. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. It is the kind of horror that rewards reading with the lights on. Solid, if not essential.

Wanted something for October and it delivered. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way.

❓ Frequently asked questions

No. It focuses on the narrator’s chaotic internal monologue during a flight, rather than solving a crime or providing narrative closure.
It requires patience for its associative leaps and lack of structure, but offers rich insight into stress-induced cognition for those willing to engage with its style.

📖 Who should read this

If you crave experimental prose and stream-of-consciousness narratives that prioritize psychological depth over plot, this surreal chase is for you. However, readers seeking traditional mystery resolutions or linear storytelling will likely find the abstract, fragmented nature of this work frustrating and unsatisfying.

📜 Historical context

Robert W. Chambers, best known for 'The King in Yellow,' pushes past his early pulp roots with this avant-garde experiment. It echoes the modernist fragmentation of Joyce and Woolf, applying their techniques to urban anxiety. This work sits at the intersection of psychological realism and surrealism, capturing the disorienting speed of early 20th-century metropolitan life through a lens of mental unraveling.
