📝 Description: Nightblood (Paperbacks from Hell)

This volume reprints T. Chris Martindale’s 1990 novel Nightblood with a new introduction by Grady Hendrix. The story follows Chris Stiles, a Vietnam veteran who returns home to find his brother murdered in Central Park. He soon discovers the killer is part of an undead army led by an ancient vampire residing in Isherwood, Indiana. As the town’s population of eight hundred residents transforms into blood-sucking monsters, Stiles must apply his military training and automatic weapons to survive. The narrative pits heavy-duty armaments against supernatural immortality. The plot moves from the war-torn memories of Vietnam to the suburban horror of Indiana. Readers will find a blend of action tropes and gothic vampire lore. The book retains its original cover painting by Greg Winters, which complements the pulp aesthetic of the text. It appeals to fans of vintage horror paperbacks and those who enjoy tactical combat against supernatural threats. This edition is ideal for collectors of the Paperbacks from Hell series. It may not suit readers seeking literary depth or slow-burn psychological terror. The tone remains consistent with the energetic style of early nineties genre fiction. Locus Magazine describes the work as genuine entertainment, while Gary Brandner notes that the scares jump off the page. Robert Bloch adds that the experience tingled his spine.

Grady Hendrix provides valuable context for T. Chris Martindale’s original work, emphasizing military tactics against supernatural immortality. While Locus Magazine and Gary Brandner praise its genuine entertainment value and jumping scares, it is not suitable for readers seeking literary depth or slow-burn psychological terror. The book relies on heavy weaponry and pulp aesthetics rather than nuanced character development. It serves as a nostalgic trip for collectors of the Paperbacks from Hell series. Those preferring atmospheric dread over tactical combat may find the approach too simplistic. However, for fans of vintage horror paperbacks and action-horror blends, it remains a spirited and effective entry in the catalog.

Very good

I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. The cover feels thinner than expected. Happy enough with the purchase.

Very good

Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn. Still worth having on the shelf.

Genuinely scary

This has been on my wishlist for months. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. Five stars from me.

Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. Highly recommend.
