A half-Indian teen uses slasher movie logic to survive a real-life massacre in her isolated town.
The narrative follows Jade Daniels as she navigates life in Proofrock, a place that rejects her. Her coping mechanism involves viewing her existence through the structure of horror films where victims become avengers. As blood spills into Indian Lake, her predictions come true, blurring the line between cinematic fantasy and brutal reality. Jones presents a unique perspective on trauma and survival by using the conventions of the slasher genre as a structural device. The story does not rely on traditional heroism but rather on Jade’s specific, encyclopedic understanding of how these tales unfold. This approach creates a distinct atmosphere that is both intellectual and visceral.
This large print edition by Thorndike Press was published in January 2022. It targets American readers interested in contemporary horror fiction. The story is set in the fictional town of Proofrock and draws heavily on the slasher film tradition popular in late twentieth century cinema.

⭐ Reader reviews
Reader rating
Wanted something for October and it delivered. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it. The font runs small in this edition. Good, with the caveats above.
First order from this shop. It is the kind of horror that rewards reading with the lights on. It assumes some familiarity with the genre's tropes. Recommended with reservations.
