Monstrosity, Humanity

MM Schreier’s debut collection presents twenty-five dark stories that challenge the boundary between human and monster. The author explores monstrosity through characters such as an arachnid celebrating aesthetic divinity and an insane eldritch goddess seeking eternal sleep. These figures invite sympathy, revealing a hidden humanity within their unnatural forms. Conversely, the human characters in these tales often display true darkness. From murderous intent to uncanny powers, they prove that cruelty resides in the human heart. The work spans gothic, psychological, and literary horror, alongside macabre humor. Schreier organizes this speculative fiction to blur the lines between species. Readers will encounter bittersweet ghosts searching for closure and remembrance. The collection does not offer easy answers but rather sits in a liminal space where definitions fail. It suits those who enjoy complex character studies and atmospheric dread. It may disappoint readers seeking straightforward monster hunts or traditional jump scares. The stories demand patience and reflection on the nature of evil. Schreier qualifies as a voice pushing boundaries by focusing on the ambiguity of identity. This collection appeals to fans of literary horror who appreciate nuanced portrayals of fear. Those preferring action-driven plots might find the pacing too deliberate. The book remains grounded in its specific exploration of what it means to be monstrous or human.
