Mister Slaughter
✍️ Robert McCammonMcCammon's novel follows an apprentice escorting a mass murderer across colonial America.
This entry expands the Matthew Corbett saga by placing the protagonist in a high-stakes transport role. The narrative focuses on the dynamic between the captors and their prisoner. Slaughter uses psychological manipulation to test the resolve of Matthew and Greathouse. The story examines the nature of evil through the lens of a single, terrifying individual. McCammon uses the historical backdrop of early 1700s America to frame this moral dilemma. The plot does not rely on action sequences alone but on the creeping dread of proximity to madness. Readers interested in character-driven horror will find the internal conflicts compelling. The book lacks extensive world-building outside the immediate journey, keeping the focus tight on the three central figures.
The novel is set in 1702 New York City and Philadelphia. It draws on the emerging metropolis of that era. The story continues the popular Matthew Corbett series started by Speaks the Nightbird and The Queen of Bedlam. McCammon writes within the tradition of gothic and supernatural fiction for American audiences.

Arrived quickly and well packaged. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn. Still worth having on the shelf.
A friend from my book club recommended it. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. Definitely recommend.
Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. It is the kind of horror that rewards reading with the lights on.
Finished it over a stormy weekend, which helped. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. Still worth having on the shelf.
Finished it over a stormy weekend, which helped. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.
Got it as a gift for a friend who loves the genre. The audiobook crowd will want the paper copy for the margins. Print is comfortable for late-night reading. Definitely recommend.
