Needed a good scare and got one. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. Will be gifting a copy to a friend.
Been meaning to get this one for a while. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. Definitely recommend.
Grabbed it for a long flight. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. Recommended with reservations.
Was skeptical at first. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.
❓ Frequently asked questions
📖 Who should read this
Academics and historians fascinated by Enlightenment-era French intellect will find this volume indispensable for its rigorous documentation. However, readers seeking atmospheric horror or Shelley’s fictional Gothic tales will be thoroughly disappointed by this dry, scholarly biographical compilation rather than supernatural narrative.
