Last Days
✍️ Peter StraubKline investigates a cult leader's murder while kidnapped by amputation worshippers.
Peter Straub presents a narrative centered on Kline, a man forcibly recruited to investigate the murder of an underground amputation cult leader. The story begins with Kline being kidnapped by a dark sect that holds the belief that physical removal brings one closer to God. He is tasked with uncovering who killed their leader while facing the possibility of saving himself, taking on the mantle of prophet, or destroying all he sees with biblical violence. The text draws on traditions of religious extremism and supernatural fiction to explore the psychological toll of such recruitment. Straub qualifies this work through his established reputation in horror literature, bringing a distinct voice to the genre. The narrative structure follows Kline’s forced participation in the sect’s internal affairs as he seeks the truth behind the murder. This book suits readers who enjoy complex plots involving cult dynamics and supernatural elements. It may not appeal to those seeking lighthearted entertainment or straightforward mystery solutions without horror undertones. The story remains grounded in the specific actions of Kline and the sect’s violent expectations.
Published by Coffee House Press in 2016, this work sits within contemporary American horror fiction. It engages with gothic traditions of religious fanaticism and supernatural dread, reflecting modern anxieties about faith and bodily autonomy through the lens of Straub's genre expertise.

Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. A keeper.
Was skeptical at first. Good introduction if you have not read this author before.
First order from this shop. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn. Recommended with reservations.
Been meaning to get this one for a while. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. Already eyeing my next order.
