Ambrose Bierce’s twelfth collected volume gathers an eclectic mix of satirical writings, observations, and miscellaneous pieces that reveal the sharp, cynical intellect behind his more explicitly macabre tales. Rather than relying on traditional ghosts or ghouls, the atmosphere here is shaped by a bleak, biting irony and a profound skepticism of human nature. This collection aims for the intellectual chill of recognizing human cruelty and absurdity, capturing a quiet, unsettling dread rather than outright terror. It suits readers who appreciate classic weird fiction, dark satire, and the sharper, more philosophical edges of nineteenth-century American literature.
