📚 WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT

Odd Thomas investigates a haunted mansion for a producer friend in this third graphic novel.

Dean Koontz returns with the third graphic novel installment featuring Odd Thomas, a fry cook who perceives spirits. This volume follows Odd as he investigates a haunted property in Pico Mundo for his friend Ozzie Boone and producer Nedra Nolan. The narrative centers on a dilapidated mansion that repels every worker hired to repair it through strange phenomena like cold rooms and falling chandeliers. Odd and his partner Stormy attempt to identify the source of these disturbances. Their investigation leads them deep into the rambling cellar, where they encounter horrors beyond typical ghostly encounters. Koontz blends supernatural mystery with character-driven drama, relying on Odd’s unique vision rather than standard detective work. The story draws on gothic traditions of haunted houses while maintaining its distinct voice through the protagonist’s perspective. This book suits readers who enjoy urban fantasy mixed with horror elements and those familiar with the Odd Thomas series. It may not appeal to fans of traditional ghost stories without a comedic or quirky tone, nor to those seeking standalone mysteries unrelated to this specific character. The graphic format offers visual interpretations of the eerie events described in the text.

Horror desk
While this installment effectively blends gothic horror with urban fantasy through Koontz’s distinctive voice, it may not suit fans of traditional ghost stories lacking a comedic tone. Readers seeking standalone mysteries unrelated to the Odd Thomas character will find little value here, as the narrative is deeply tied to the protagonist’s perspective and established lore. The graphic format enhances the eerie atmosphere but remains specific to this series’ continuity. It is best approached by those who enjoy character-driven supernatural drama rather than pure horror or conventional detective fiction. Those expecting a straightforward haunted house tale without quirky elements might find the tone mismatched with their preferences.

I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn.

Excellent find

Grabbed it for a long flight. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. Belongs in any working kitchen.

Dread done right

This has been on my wishlist for months. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid.

Very good

Been meaning to get this one for a while. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. The font runs small in this edition. Solid, if not essential.

Kept me up

Been meaning to get this one for a while. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there.

Genuinely scary

First order from this shop. The audiobook crowd will want the paper copy for the margins. One of my better finds this year.

A new favorite

I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. Not a jump-scare book; it gets under the skin and stays there. Will be gifting a copy to a friend.
