King uses the framework of a prison to explore empathy and injustice through the lens of the supernatural. The text draws on the tradition of serial fiction, originally released in six volumes before becoming a single work. It focuses on the relationship between the guard Paul Edgecombe and John Coffey, an unusual inmate. The chapters are organized to build tension, moving from the initial discovery of Coffey's gifts to the tragic conclusion involving Eduard Delacroix. Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. Already eyeing my next order.
Not my usual subgenre but wanted to branch out. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. Will be gifting a copy to a friend.
Finally got around to ordering this. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. My only quibble is that the middle third sags a little. Solid, if not essential.
Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. It is the kind of horror that rewards reading with the lights on. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. My only quibble is that the middle third sags a little.
