Gerald's Game
✍️ Stephen KingA woman handcuffed to a bed must survive her own trauma after her husband dies during their secluded getaway.
Jessie Burlingame travels to a remote lakeside house with her husband Gerald for what was supposed to be a romantic escape. Their evening involves kinky sex games, which Jessie has grown tired of but agrees to participate in. The situation escalates when Gerald dies unexpectedly, leaving her bound and helpless in the dark. She faces not only physical entrapment but also psychological torment from memories and imagined threats. King uses this premise to examine how individuals cope with extreme isolation and past trauma. The narrative focuses on Jessie’s internal dialogue and her gradual acceptance of her solitary state. It is a study in endurance rather than action.
This novel was published by Scribner Book Company in 2016. It gained significant attention after being adapted into a Netflix film directed by Mike Flanagan, starring Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood. The story fits within the tradition of American gothic fiction, focusing on domestic spaces turned into sites of terror.

Arrived quickly and well packaged. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid. One of my better finds this year.
Been meaning to get this one for a while. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.
Needed a good scare and got one. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. If you like this kind of cooking, don't hesitate.
I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. Print is comfortable for late-night reading. The font runs small in this edition. Happy enough with the purchase.
