📝 Description: Four Gothic Novels: The Castle of Otranto; Vathek; The Monk; Frankenstein

This Oxford University Press volume gathers four foundational works that define the Gothic tradition. It begins with Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto, which established the genre’s focus on haunted castles and ghostly interventions in 1764. William Beckford follows with Vathek, a narrative alternating grotesque comedy with exotic magnificence as the Caliph journeys toward damnation. Matthew Lewis contributes The Monk, a violent tale of ambition and murder set within a sinister Madrid monastery. Mary Shelley completes the collection with Frankenstein, her enduring story of a student who discovers how to animate a being from human relics. The text illustrates the range and attraction of Gothic fiction through extreme and sensational plots. Each work functions as a powerful psychological study of isolation and monomania. The book suits readers interested in late eighteenth-century literary trends and supernatural themes. It may not appeal to those seeking contemporary horror or realistic drama, as these stories rely on melodrama and catastrophe. Shelley’s inclusion highlights her significant role in the development of this specific fictional mode. The collection demonstrates how early Gothic tales influenced numerous followers through their depiction of terror and monastic settings. The juxtaposition of Beckford’s Caliph with Shelley’s creature shows the genre’s flexibility. Readers will find these texts valuable for understanding the origins of modern horror fiction. The volume provides a clear view into the psychological depths explored by these authors during this period.

This Oxford University Press volume provides a compelling look at the roots of Gothic literature through four seminal texts. It effectively demonstrates how early tales influenced numerous followers via depictions of terror and monastic settings. However, it may not appeal to those seeking contemporary horror or realistic drama, as these stories rely heavily on melodrama and catastrophe. The inclusion of Shelley’s work underscores her role in this mode, yet the reliance on sensational plots limits its broad accessibility. It is a scholarly tool rather than casual entertainment.

Slow start

Needed a good scare and got one. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. Delivery took a bit longer than quoted. Recommended with reservations.

Finally got around to ordering this. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.

First order from this shop. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight.

A modern classic

Grabbed it for a long flight. The audiobook crowd will want the paper copy for the margins. If you like this kind of cooking, don't hesitate.

Took a chance on it after reading the description here. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid. It assumes some familiarity with the genre's tropes. Good, with the caveats above.
