Two veterans face a silent, bloody New York City in this revised horror novel.
Darren Wearmouth’s First Activation follows brothers Harry and Jack as they travel from Manchester to New York City for their annual weekend getaway. Their trip takes a dark turn when they arrive at JFK Airport to find it silent and deserted, with ground crew members slaughtered in gruesome fashion. The narrative introduces these characters as military veterans who have never faced such chaos before. As the brothers move through the city, they encounter murderous individuals and witness widespread carnage in what appears to be a post-apocalyptic landscape. The story focuses on their struggle to find safety amidst this destruction. Escape becomes their primary goal, though the text questions whether any sane location remains accessible to them. This revised edition contains editorial revisions that refine the original manuscript. Wearmouth writes a tale of survival and sudden disaster for readers who enjoy supernatural fiction and gothic horror elements. Fans of military protagonists facing impossible odds will find this compelling. Those seeking lighthearted adventure or traditional ghost stories might prefer other selections in our horror section.
This 2015 release by 47north fits into the modern horror genre, specifically targeting fans of supernatural fiction. It draws on the tradition of urban disaster narratives where familiar American landmarks like New York City become sites of terror and isolation for British protagonists.

Wearmouth delivers a tense tale of survival where familiar landmarks become sites of gruesome horror. The narrative effectively establishes dread through the contrast between a mundane weekend getaway and the sudden, silent apocalypse at JFK Airport. By focusing on military veterans facing unrecognizable chaos, the book explores themes of helplessness and resilience in the face of overwhelming odds. The atmosphere is thick with gothic horror elements and supernatural undertones, creating a palpable sense of dread. While the revised edition refines the manuscript, the core strength lies in its relentless pace and the brothers' desperate struggle for safety. It suits readers who prefer gritty, character-driven disaster fiction over conventional hauntings.
