📝 Description: Elevation

Scott Carey loses weight without changing appearance in Castle Rock while navigating tensions with his neighbors. Scott Carey begins losing weight without changing his appearance. He discovers he weighs the same whether wearing heavy clothes or standing naked. This strange affliction isolates him from medical scrutiny but connects him to his neighbor, Doctor Bob Ellis. Scott faces daily friction with two lesbians next door who run a restaurant struggling against local prejudice. One woman offers warmth while the other remains cold. Scott recognizes his own hidden biases as he watches the town react to their presence. The narrative weaves through these tensions, using the annual foot race as a focal point for community interaction. King examines how small towns handle difference and fear. The book does not rely on gore or monsters. It focuses on human connection and quiet acceptance. Readers seeking visceral terror may find this too gentle. Those interested in character-driven drama and social observation will appreciate the nuanced look at prejudice and redemption.

Mixed feelings

Needed a good scare and got one. It is the kind of horror that rewards reading with the lights on. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn. Solid, if not essential.

A modern classic

Finally got around to ordering this. Some chapters are hard to read in the best possible way. Belongs in any working kitchen.

Worth every penny

Arrived quickly and well packaged. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.

Genuinely scary

First order from this shop. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.

Chilling

Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. Read it in two sittings; the second one ran past midnight. Glad I finally picked this up.

❓ Frequently asked questions

No. There are no traditional monsters or gore here. The 'horror' is purely the social anxiety and isolation of living as an oddity in a small town.
He isn't losing mass; he is literally becoming lighter to escape societal scrutiny. This physical lightness serves as a metaphor for his desire to shed the weight of community judgment and find genuine connection.
