A group of friends faces an alien threat in Maine during their annual hunting trip.
The story follows four men who reconnect after twenty-five years for a hunting expedition in the north woods of Maine. Their gathering turns dangerous when a stranger appears, claiming to see lights in the sky. This encounter introduces them to a terrible creature from another world. The friends must rely on abilities they barely understand from their youth to survive. The narrative explores how past actions influence present realities. It focuses on the dynamics of long-term friendship under extreme pressure. The alien invasion serves as a backdrop for examining personal history and shared trauma. King uses this premise to create tension between the mundane world of hunting and the supernatural horror that intrudes upon it.
This novel sits within the tradition of American horror fiction, specifically drawing on gothic and supernatural themes. It is set in Derry, Maine, a location familiar to fans of King’s work. The 2011 publication date places it in the modern era of paperback horror releases.

A friend from my book club recommended it. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. Five stars from me.
Was skeptical at first. The audiobook crowd will want the paper copy for the margins. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you. Recommended with reservations.
Took a chance on it after reading the description here. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you. Happy enough with the purchase.
Was skeptical at first. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. If you like this kind of cooking, don't hesitate.
This has been on my wishlist for months. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks.
