Cujo
✍️ Stephen KingA loyal Saint Bernard turns deadly after contracting rabies in an underground cave.
The narrative tracks Cujo, a nearly two-hundred-pound Saint Bernard, as he shifts from a friendly companion to a creature of pure malice. His chase of a rabbit into a hidden cave initiates a chain of events that consumes his mind. The story details how this sickness turns affection into uncontrollable hatred. King illustrates the terrifying reality of a beloved pet becoming an instrument of death. The plot remains tightly focused on the dog’s deteriorating mental state and the physical danger he poses to the town of Castle Rock. It is a study in inevitable tragedy rather than a fight for survival.
Set in Castle Rock, this work draws on the tradition of American horror fiction. King utilizes the setting to ground supernatural dread in everyday reality. The narrative reflects fears about the fragility of domestic life and the sudden intrusion of primal violence into familiar spaces.

I read a lot of horror and I'm picky. Good introduction if you have not read this author before.
Ordered it for Halloween and it came in time. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. Belongs in any working kitchen.
Took a chance on it after reading the description here. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. Definitely recommend.
A friend from my book club recommended it. The atmosphere builds slowly and then does not let go. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. Great value for what you get.
Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. Solid, if not essential.
