📚 WHAT THE BOOK IS ABOUT

A band hunts a sound in Africa while a nurse tends to a healing patient in a Midwestern hospital.

The novel operates on two parallel tracks that converge through psychological unease. One track involves Philip Tonka leading his band into the African desert under military guidance. They pursue an ominous audio source that threatens their sanity. The other track focuses on Ellen and her enigmatic patient. His rapid recovery defies medical logic, suggesting a supernatural or conspiratorial origin. Malerman uses these dual plots to explore themes of desperation and hidden truths. The book does not offer easy answers. It relies on atmosphere and dread rather than jump scares. Fans of gothic fiction will find the hospital scenes particularly effective. The desert sequences provide a stark contrast with their harsh environment.

📝 Description: Black Mad Wheel

Josh Malerman, a Bram Stoker Award nominee, presents Black Mad Wheel, a novel that intertwines two distinct narratives. The first follows the Danes, a washed-up band known as the Darlings of Detroit, who seek a number one hit. An agent from the U. S. Army directs them to an African desert to track a mysterious and malevolent sound. Under front man Philip Tonka, they face a twisted conspiracy in the scorching heat. The second thread occurs in a nondescript Midwestern hospital. A nurse named Ellen cares for a patient recovering from a near-fatal accident. His injuries heal at a remarkable rate, yet the circumstances remain mysterious. As he reveals more about his past, Ellen performs impossible acts for him. The story blends elements of psychological horror with gothic tension. It draws on traditions found in Heart of Darkness and Lost. Readers who enjoy atmospheric dread and unreliable narration will appreciate this work. Those seeking straightforward action or clear resolutions may find the ambiguity unsettling. The narrative structure shifts between the desert expedition and the hospital room, creating a chilling effect where truth is obscured.

💎 Our verdict on Black Mad Wheel

Horror Reads editorial team
Horror desk
Black Mad Wheel succeeds in building palpable tension through its disjointed yet converging plots, though it firmly rejects conventional narrative satisfaction. The desert sequences and hospital scenes effectively generate psychological horror, relying on atmosphere rather than jump scares. However, this book does NOT suit readers seeking straightforward action, clear resolutions, or comforting clarity. The deliberate ambiguity may frustrate those expecting definitive answers to the mysterious sound or the patient's rapid healing. It is a challenging read that demands patience for its slow-burn dread and thematic depth regarding sanity and conspiracy.

📖 Why choose it

📖

Why this book is worth reading

Readers who thrive on psychological unease and atmospheric dread will find this novel deeply rewarding. The dual narrative structure, contrasting the scorching African desert with a sterile Midwestern hospital, offers a unique exploration of desperation and hidden truths. Those who appreciate unreliable narration and gothic tension over straightforward action or clear resolutions will engage with the chilling ambiguity Malerman crafts. It is ideal for fans of cosmic horror and dark fantasy who enjoy stories that obscure truth rather than explain it, providing a lingering sense of dread without offering easy answers.

Mixed feelings

Finally got around to ordering this. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. Gorier than the description lets on, if that matters to you. Happy enough with the purchase.

Exactly as described

Needed a good scare and got one. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. Shipping was quick too.

Almost perfect

Finished it over a stormy weekend, which helped. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. Happy enough with the purchase.

Slow start

Added this to the shelf next to the ones I reread. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn.

A modern classic

Finished it over a stormy weekend, which helped. It pairs well with the classics it is clearly in conversation with. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it. One of my better finds this year.

Arrived quickly and well packaged. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it.

Not for the squeamish

Wanted something for October and it delivered. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. A couple of the side characters are thinly drawn. Recommended with reservations.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Not exactly. While there are malevolent forces, the horror stems primarily from psychological unraveling and ambiguous threats rather than clear-cut monsters, focusing more on the characters' deteriorating mental states than physical combat.
They run parallel with subtle thematic resonance rather than direct plot crossover. The desert expedition and the hospital room serve as mirrored settings for exploring similar themes of obsession, truth, and the unknown, creating a chilling overall effect.

📖 Who should read this

Seekers of atmospheric dread and psychological horror will thrive here, especially if you enjoy unreliable narrators and gothic tension. Conversely, readers craving straightforward action, linear plots, or clear-cut resolutions may find the persistent ambiguity unsettling and frustrating.

📜 Historical context

This novel stands firmly within the lineage of existential terror, echoing the descent into madness found in Conrad’s Heart of Darkness while mirroring the enigmatic survival tales of Lost. It bridges mid-century gothic suspense with modern psychological horror, utilizing dual narratives to explore how isolation and unseen threats erode sanity, much like the best works of Shirley Jackson and H.P. Lovecraft.
