After escaping from a seemingly hopeless environment of poverty and religious fanaticism, Angel Adams finds herself in a Victorian mansion on Nob Hill in San Francisco and enmeshed in a sinister society known as the Serpentine Order and under the influence of its Grand Master, the evil Merl Lynn. Horror desk

The book excels in establishing a claustrophobic atmosphere within its setting of Nob Hill mansions, effectively blending social commentary with supernatural dread. The depiction of the Serpentine Order creates a palpable sense of unease, grounding the horror in realistic human manipulation rather than mere ghostly apparitions. While the narrative focuses heavily on internal psychological struggle, it maintains sufficient external tension through the high stakes of political intrigue and coercion. It is best suited for readers who prefer atmospheric Gothic tales over fast-paced action. Those who enjoy character-driven stories where the primary antagonist is a corrupting ideology will find this a satisfying and thought-provoking experience within the horror genre.
