📝 Description: A Young Man in a Hurry, and Other Short Stories

Robert W. Chambers, known for The King in Yellow, presents a collection of short stories that diverge from his darker reputation. This volume features light romantic tales where the author’s passion for fishing, hunting, and natural scenery takes center stage. All narratives are set within America, offering readers a glimpse into domestic and outdoor life rather than supernatural horror. The title story operates as a comedy of coincidence, utilizing an atmospheric setting of nocturnal snow in New York to drive its plot. The edition itself is notable for its unique illustrations and elegant classic cream paper, which complement the vintage aesthetic of the work. These visual elements enhance the reading experience without overshadowing the text. This book suits readers who appreciate American literary traditions from the late nineteenth century, particularly those interested in Chambers’ lesser-known romantic works. It may not appeal to those seeking the supernatural or gothic themes associated with his most famous title. The collection remains a distinct entry in his bibliography, focusing on terrestrial pleasures and coincidental encounters.

Horror desk

This collection is a surprising departure for fans expecting the cosmic dread of The King in Yellow. While beautifully presented with vintage illustrations, it lacks the supernatural elements that define Chambers' reputation. It will not appeal to readers seeking horror, ghost stories, or psychological terror. Instead, it is a gentle exploration of American life and romantic coincidence. Those who enjoy atmospheric comedy and nature writing may find merit here, but horror enthusiasts should expect a terrestrial, non-spooky experience entirely devoid of the dark fantasy they likely anticipate.
