Corrosion

Bassoff’s debut effectively synthesizes the stylistic influences of Thompson, O’Connor, and Faulkner into a cohesive narrative voice that is both literary and visceral. The novel succeeds in creating a palpable sense of dread through its focus on three distinct yet interconnected worlds colliding in a confined, mountainous setting. The characterization of the scarred veteran and masked preacher adds layers of mystery and psychological depth, avoiding simplistic tropes in favor of nuanced exploration of evil and trauma. While the heavy literary influences may challenge some seeking pure adrenaline, the book rewards patient readers with a rich, haunting atmosphere. It is best suited for enthusiasts of gothic fiction and true crime who value atmospheric tension and complex moral landscapes over straightforward plot resolutions.
