Readers seeking unsettling fiction and complex character studies will find this book deeply engaging. The narrative invites you into a labyrinth of dark thoughts and perverse relationships, perfect for those who appreciate the gothic tradition’s focus on isolation and neurosis. This edition is particularly valuable for its afterword by Jonathan Lethem, which provides fresh perspective and insight into the novel’s construction within literary history. Finally got around to ordering this. Slow burn, but the burn is the point. The binding held up to being carried around for a week. Five stars from me.
Finally got around to ordering this. The setting is practically a character, and a hostile one. A few scenes I will not forget, whether I want to or not. The cover feels thinner than expected. Good, with the caveats above.
This has been on my wishlist for months. There's real craft in how much is left unsaid. The ending is bleak and honest, not a twist for the sake of one. Definitely recommend.
Been meaning to get this one for a while. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. Shipping was quick too.
Grabbed it for a long flight. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it.
