Horror desk

Kris Waldherr’s dark gothic novel, Unnatural Creatures, reimagines Mary Shelley's classic through the eyes of the three women closest to Victor Frankenstein and his creation: his mother Caroline, bride Elizabeth, and servant Justine. The story trades frantic laboratory terror for a quieter, more oppressive atmosphere of domestic dread, focusing on the silent suffering and quiet resilience of women caught in the shadow of unchecked ambition. The fear here is atmospheric and psychological, rooted in isolation and the creeping realization of monstrous hubris within the home. It suits readers who appreciate slow-burning historical gothic fiction and character-driven explorations of familiar myths rather than fast-paced monster stories.
