Thornhedge
✍️ T. KingfisherA retelling of Sleeping Beauty from the perspective of the thorn-covered guardian.
Toadling lives in faerieland after her abduction as a baby. When asked to bless a newborn human, she agrees but imposes strict conditions. She grows a wall of brambles thick enough to stop any army. A knight arrives centuries later, believing he must slay a dragon or break a spell. He does not realize the true nature of the protection. The story examines loyalty and the definition of safety. It contrasts the warmth of fairy lands with the harshness of human expectations. The narrative remains focused on Toadling’s choices and their long-term consequences.
This work sits within the tradition of American fantasy publishing, specifically under the Tor Books imprint. It engages with established legends and mythology, offering a modern reinterpretation of European folk tales for contemporary readers interested in supernatural fiction.

📖 Why choose it
Why this book is worth reading
Readers who appreciate subverted fairy tales and character-driven fantasy will find this concise work deeply rewarding. The narrative offers a refreshing perspective by focusing on Toadling, the thorn-covered guardian, rather than the traditional princess figure. This shift allows for an examination of loyalty and the complex definition of safety within a supernatural context. Those interested in how folklore traditions can be blended with gothic atmosphere and action will enjoy Kingfisher’s distinct take on world-building. The book is ideal for those seeking a focused narrative without extensive political intrigue, providing a tight exploration of long-term consequences resulting from specific choices made by its protagonist.

Finished it over a stormy weekend, which helped. The monster is scarier for how little you see of it. Genuinely unsettling in places, and it earns it without cheap tricks. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.
Took a chance on it after reading the description here. The prose is clean and the scares land because the characters feel real. If you like this kind of cooking, don't hesitate.
A friend from my book club recommended it. It leans on old gothic bones and makes them creak convincingly. My only regret is not ordering it sooner.
Needed a good scare and got one. The dread is in the pacing, not in gore, which is exactly how I like it. Good introduction if you have not read this author before. Well worth it.
